We all have to set goals. It's how we get through life.
As a little kid you set goals:
to write your name
tie your shoes
run a mile
finish your homework
We set goals daily:
to clean the house
make dinner
go to the gym
take the kids to school
Now the goals I want to talk about are a little more in depth. I have been in a rut lately with my spirit, body and mind. I need to get out of this rut and while I was trying to figure it out I realized I haven't set any recent goals.
First let me tell you a tiny bit about myself. I am a musician. I have wanted to be a musician since I was little. When I was a fourth grader started band for the first time I instantly knew I wanted to be a music teacher. I have played piano since I was a 1st grader but when I started playing flute I knew my love for music was just starting. I never wanted to be anything else. I got into which school and a I joined choir. My senior year of high school I took four music classes all year plus an AP Music Theory class after school twice a week. I went to college and I studied music and I got a degree in music even though I had plenty of people that told me I wouldn't make it.
Some of you are asking What's the point of this story? What does it have to do with my journey now?
The point is I had a goal. I had short term goals that got me to my long term goal of being a music major, and because I had those goals even those who told me I couldn't do it didn't get in my way.
I am now at a new turning point in my life. I now have my degree and I am a full time mom to three, actively involved in my church and community, have a full private music studio of students and work out regularly at the gym. I have met all my childhood goals in my life at it's time to set new ones.
A COUPLE RULES TO REMEMBER WHEN SETTING GOALS
#1 It's a dream until you write it down, then it's a goal
If we don't write down those things we want to do they are merely dreams and they can easily be forgotten.
#2 Make them Specific
Make sure you know exactly what you want. Saying I'm going to start working out it to vague. It's a great goal but it needs to be I'm going to work out three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) at 9 AM for two hours. You will hold yourself to your goals a lot better if they are specific.
#3 Make them Measurable
Make sure you have some way of measuring your progress whether it's a chart or measuring your waist, or taking a picture every week to show progress.
#4 Make them Attainable
Don't make goals that aren't reality. Like a goal to win the lottery. Make goals that will fit your life and won't make you sacrifice family and friends in the end.
#5 Have a Support System
It is never fun to do things on your own. No one would want to play football for an empty stadium.
#6 Give Yourself a Time Limit
Give yourself a realistic time frame to get your goal done. Obviously as a child I couldn't get my degree in music as a 12 year old. Or if you have a goal to lose 20 pounds don't give yourself only 2 months to get it done. One it's not healthy and two it's not very likely to happen.
YOU DON'T WANT TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR FAILURE!
SO HERE ARE MY GOALS
Short Term Goals
1. Find a Voice Teacher to Take lessons from twice a month.
2. Find Something to train for that will test my strength
3. Write a post for my blog twice a week
4. Continue to increase the amount of weight I lift at the gym weekly.
Long Term Goals
1. Get my Masters in Music within the next 5 years
2. In 5 years have a Healthy Family Cookbook published
Now sometimes our short term goals are simply to find long term goals. Like my number 2 to find something to train for. If I accomplish this goal it will also help my number 4 short term goal.
NOW YOUR TURN WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
